Description

Barberry Royal Burgundy showcases striking, deep burgundy foliage that retains its color through the growing season. Small, pale yellow flowers may appear in late spring, followed by bright red berries that can linger into the cooler months—providing a resource for birds. Thanks to its compact size, this shrub functions well as an accent in borders, foundation plantings, or mixed beds. It is also known for deer resistance, making it a practical choice for landscapes prone to browsing. When grown in a suitable container with proper drainage, it can offer a rich splash of color to patios and entryways.

General Care

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade, with at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  • Soil: Adapts to a variety of well-drained soils; amend heavier soils with organic matter to improve drainage.
  • Watering: Water regularly during the first season to establish roots. Once established, it tolerates short dry spells but benefits from watering during extended drought.
  • Mulching: A 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps maintain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Keep mulch slightly back from the main stems.
  • Pruning: If shaping is desired, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.

Barberry Royal Burgundy provides a bold color contrast in cooler climates and maintains a manageable size, making it a versatile option for a range of landscape designs.
